Dutch sat outside the inn, tankard of beer in hand. He took a lazy slurp of it, before bringing the glass down heavily on the table.
"Het Dutch!" Called a voice from the other side of the street. "You recruited anyone yet?"
Dutch shook his head.
"Not yet boss. Next kid who comes round the corner, promise."

Cody walked into the bar walked over to the bar tender. "give me a whisky." the tender poured a shot of whisky for him. After the second he walked over to the inn and stood infront of Dutch. "You lookin for a sea man right?" His black hear was braided into two braids that hung. He stood there with out saying anything else. Watching the man with his piercing blue eyes, as if he could see inside him. A wolf dog came up and sat next to the man. Cody gently laid his hand on the dogs head.

Dutch sniffed and looked up from his drink. "Aye. As long as you have a level head and a knowledge of boats then I think we can take you." He compared the boy's flimsy frame to his own highly muscular one, he looked a little weedy, but it was better than no one. Dutch drained his drink in one, bringing the tankard down on the table again, before stretching his arms and getting to his feet. "I suppose we better get to the boat, to show you what you'll be doin' "

"I've got two strong hands, and sharp mind and a willingness for hard honest work." Cody fallowed the man. The wolf dog never left his side.

When they got to the ships blank Cody stared at it. It was a big ship. Sea worthy by the size. But then again any ship could become part of a underwater graveyard.

"this is her right?" he pointed to the ship.

Dutch nodded, beckoning him closer, down the jetty untill they were beside it. "This here's The Venturer." He patted the side of the blue painted boat fondly, it clanged slightly in response. "She's the boat that'll be taking us out tonight. I can show you the ropes, but only if you need me to. We'll be setting off at just past midday. You have one hour." He walked past the boy, giving him a firm pat on the shoulder. "Oh yeah..." He spun on his heel. "You better brush up on your knowledge about mermaids."

"mermaids?" Cody asked. he gave a little laughed and shook his head. "spirits of the water. I've heard elders speak of them." He paused. "can you show me to my courters?" He fallowed the man up the boardwalk and into a small cabin on the ship. As he entered the wolf dog jumped up onto the bed and laid down. Cody smiled at his wolf. Then nodded to Dutch. "thanks this will do fine."


He laid the gunny sack that had been over his shoulder on the floor.

Dutch grinned and went to walk out the door. He paused at the doorway. "One kiss from a mermaid can save a man from drowning." He sniffed. "We'll be leaving soon, it's nearly time to go."

"heard that one too, heard they can heal, guid a ship, save from drowning...the legand verys form tribe to tribe." when dutch had left cody sat on his bed. "how did I get into this?" he asked his wolf. "that last thing I wanted was to be on another ship" he groaned and laid on the bed. "whell Cody you just couldnt keep away from the sea could you..."

Dutch headed onboard, before he met his boss. "We're gonna have to set sail now, the weather's gonna turn pretty bad." And with that, he called the rest of the crew on board.
Within minutes, the boat had drifted lazily away from the jetty.

Cody felt the drifting of the ship. He heard the waves against the ship and he new they were setting sail. He went up top and watched the docks get smaller and smaller. He remembered the last time he had set sail four years ago. His mother didn't stop him she knew she couldn't provide for him anymore. As sad as it sounds she helped him get to the docks. He remembered the tears in her eyes as the ship sailed away. her face was fuzzy but he remembered the tears. He lowered his head. He wondered if she was still alive. He hadn't seen her since the day they had left. *when I get off this ship.* he said to himself. *I'll find her.*

now as the docks became just a far away line he looked at his wolf. "no, turning back now..." a faint growl came from the wolf and Cody looked up. A gruff looking sailor came forward. "can I help you?" Cody asked.

not sure....u make it up...wanting trouble who he is...whay he isnt working....you think of something what ever works..

The sailor approached the new man, his heavily tattooed and incredibly muscular arms crossed firmly. "Are you gonna do something around here kid? Or are you just going to stand there with that mutt of yours looking overboard? We're on a voyage here, and if I'm not mistaken you were the one who signed up for it." The man threw the kid a heavy net with ease. "Fix the holes in that. We're going to need it later."

Cody cought it..."she a wolf not a mutt." he almost got in the saliors face. Although not as big Cody didnt let anyone talk smack about his campaion..."And if I were you I'd watch your back she dont seam to be taken to you." the wolfs sruff was standing up straight and a slow and steady growl came from her throat.

The buff man looked down at the dog in distaste. "Well keep it on a lead. We don't want any animals running wild on a small boat like this. Anyway, we'll be there soon." He said, before turning away.

cody stifled a laugh. "no one ties up a wolf" then looking at the she wolf. "better find a rope for himself if hes worried about animals." Cody fixed the net the brought it to were a few other nets were. placing it gently as to now tangle it.

Dutch looked over his shoulder at Leon, the hefty sailor. Seeing him leave, he walked over to Cody. "Sorry about him." He chuckled. "Leon never liked new people much." He patted the wolf fondly on the head. "Good to see you've taken to untangling the net." He sat on a railing and picked up the other end, beginning to do the same. "We're going to need this later."

Cody made a nosie in his thoart warning the wolf not to bite. He watched the sailor with his eyes. Not saying anything. he sat down on the floor and helped with the rest of nets.

"So, where'd you come from?" He asked, making friendly conversation, whilst keeping an eye on the horizon.

Cody started at the horizon before tackling a net. "I come from a speck of dirt." he replied. Cody heard the sailor chuckle. "im serious. a place called Pine Ridge a little speck of land that nothing can grow on." he nodded. "where r u from?"

"A small fishing village just south of here, right on the coast. I spent most of my days on the boats as a little kid, the obsession grew over time." He gestured to the net. "Never really did anything extraordinary, nothing new. Untill I found out about them mermaids." He lowered his voice slightly. "You heard the stories? One kiss can save you and all that?" He nodded. "I became fascinated. Never got my chance though. Never been able to go out as far as the island that's said to be their haven." He turned his head and looked towards the front of the boat. The sun cast it's reflection over the glimmering water, and he squinted. "There it is." He pointed to the grey lump on the horizon. "That's the island."

Cody listend but said nothing. "Im just here to send money back home. times arent as sweet as people make them out to be on the reservations.. casinos dont give us a lot of money...they just destory familys." cody looked out across the water..."well see if mermaids are there or not i recken.." his voice was flat.
