BattieBean and PoloPopcorn's Greatest Experiment

"Wake up, fish-head!" Shae yelled, tearing the blanket away from him and throwing a pillow at his head. She was trying to be nice, and was hoping that this came across and friendly teasing. Allowing him to wake up on his own after that, she walked into the kitchen - purposely avoiding the drawerm - and opening the fridge. "You want some tuna?" She called over her shoulder.
Without waiting for an answer - or even an acknowledgement that he was paying attention to her - she chucked a can over her shoulder at him with perfect aim. If Felix didn't catch it, it would hit him in the face.

When the blanket was torn from him, Felix responded by giving Shae his best feline death-stare. When the pillow bounced off his head, he clawed it nearer to him, and curled up again. He seemed quite content to go back to sleep, until he heard the words, "You want some tuna?"
The cat ears on his head twitched, and his hand reached up to catch the can automatically as Shae launched it at his head.
He caught it easily, then uncurled himself into a sitting position.
Cupping the can carefully in his hands, he tilted his head sideways, and exposed it to his sharp canines - then he bit down through the metal.
After a fair amount of clawing and tearing, he had the can open.
He took a grateful whiff of the tuna, then looked up at Shae, finally awake.
"Mornin'." He greeted her with a smile.
"Wanna toss me a spoon? I'm not a complete animal, after all..." He finished with a half-grin.
Setting the tuna down on the table beside him, he yawned and stretched extensively, once again demonstrating his feline traits.
In many ways, he was more cat than human...

Shae rolled her eyes and went to grab a spoon from a drawer neaqr the fridge. It rolled open slowly, getting stuck on the track multiple times. She growled and yanked it open, pulling it from the crevice completely and sending its contents flying. Snarling, she furiously started snapping up the silverware, pointing ears twitching angrily. A bulge in the back of her pants worked it way free, revealing a tail with fur the same shade as her dark red hair. It was flying back and forth with obvious irritation.
Why did this have to happen? She was already stressed enough already without this little incident. And now her animal instincts were coming out, and she didn't know how to react to it. She'd had complete control over them for the past months, and now she felt as if nothing was under her control anymore. Kelli most likely knew about her - or at least had an idea - and Felix insisted on keeping her company.
All in due time, Shaelynn, a voice whispered to her.
She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose, taking in a deep breath.

"Hey, chill!" Felix said, jumping up and rushing to Shae's side, hurriedly helping her to pick up the spilled silverware.
He had not intended for that to happen... But somehow it still felt like his fault.
"Calm down - no need to get your tail in a twist." He teased gently, casting a glance at the furry fox tail lashing behind her.
Funny, he'd never noticed that before...
He didn't have a tail. At least, not as far as he knew.

Shae glared up at him, her pupils contracting until they were nearly unnoticable against the bright green irises of her eyes. Her silence was tense and spoke of anger and irritation. "In case you haven't noticed, it isn't really twisting." She corrected.
Piling the silverware into the small sink to wash, she walked over to the couch and sat down, wringing her hands together. Why waqsn't she strong when it really counted? That was so stupid, that little hissy fit. It shouldn't have happened. Usually she was better at hiding her emotions. Sighing, she looked up at Felix. "Sorry. Just not really used to... this." She gestured to herself and him. "Whatever this is."
With a half smile tugging the corner of her mouth up, she stood and walked into her room to grab her duffel bag. When she returned, she looked at him expectantly.
"You ready? I'm sure you don't have much to bring to Aylene's... right?"

"This," Felix began, mimicking Shae's gesture, "Is called socialising. And don't worry, I'm not much used to it either." He offered a reassuring smile , then sat down on the couch and waited for Shae as she went off to grab her bag.
"You ready? I'm sure you don't have much to bring to Aylene's... right?"
He shrugged, and stood up, ready to go.
"I don't have anything with me, anyway." He laughed, shaking his head. "I'll make a plan. I always do."

Shae rolled her eyes. "I know it's called socializing, dumbbutt." With a sigh, she slung the bag over her shoulder and turned away, reaching her hand down her shirt to grab the set of keys from her bra. It was a lot less convenient there, but a lot safer. Not many people would think to look there if they were trying to be inconspicuous about pickpocketing. Or pickbraing. Whichever.
Chuckling at her train of thought, she exited her apartment and stepped into the hall, motioning for Felix to follow. When he stepped out, she locked the door behind her and turned around. Her elderly neighbor - Beverly - was watching her with a shocked expression, and Shae finally realized what exactly this must look like. Her hair was messed up, there were shadows under her eyes, and she was running away with a boy that spent the night in her apartment. Groaning, she grabbed Felix's wrist and pulled him throught the double doors that led to the outside world.

When Shae grabbed his wrist, Felix's lips tightened, and a thoroughly unimpressed expression took residence on his feline face.
"I'd have followed on my own, you know." He pointed out coolly, "You don't have to tug me around." He huffed an irritable snort, and twisted his wrist free of her grip - then fell into step beside her, beginning to act somewhat aloof again. He didn't mean to - it just tended to happen. His feline instincts, no doubt.
He felt slightly guilty for giving Shae the cold shoulder for no apparent reason, but his pride wouldn't allow him to apologise, so he just shrugged it off and stalked along beside her.

Arching an eyebrow at Felix's sudden mood change, Shae wondered what was wrong. Was grabbing his wrist really all it took to set him off? Shaking her head in dismay, she began humming the tune of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" while slyly smirking at the boy. As the walked under the shadow of a huge oak tree, a scent brushed under her nose, immediately snatching her attention away from the song. The metallic smell of blood was pouring into the air from somewhere - but where?
Whirling around, she discovered a knife embedded in the bark of the tree, red liquid dripping down it, forming a small puddle at the base of the large plant. Sighing in relief, Shae turned away and began to walk on when a whimper sounded near her.
It was coming from the large crown of leaves in the tree.
