((Not giving up on this just yet, but my muse is dwindling... :/ ))

"I know." Kern began slowly, "Because I listen. Because I hear..." He paused a moment then, dropping his gaze to the ground. The chilly night breeze ruffled his hair, sliding over the back of his neck to release a chill that scuttled desperately down his spine. Slowly, he raised his coalescent eyes, lids delicately shut, and turned them to the half moon blinking peaceably in the inky darkness above. The lids drew slowly back, and Kern gazed with distant eyes past the harsh clouds that gathered threateningly around the moon.
"I always have..." He finished cryptically, his whisper merging with a gust of icy wind. It fluttered over the ground, lifting dead leaves into a silent, twisting tango - then dropping them heartlessly to the cold, hard ground. Kern stepped forward, and the leaves crunched beneath his feet, killing the silence - if only for a moment.
