2 Months later

Jed slept silently next to Annalee, his chest rising and falling slowly as the first rays of sunshine peeked through the trees.

Annalee rolled over and yawned. Eyes fluttering open she looked over at Jed with a soft smile. Letting out a small sigh she had neglected to tell him, she thought she was pregnant. And it was impossible that the baby was Jed's...

Slowly, his eyes fluttered open, and he stared at the ceiling for a few moments, before looking at Annalee. She had an unusually guilty expression on. "What's wrong?" He asked with a friendly smile.

Anna shifted before looking up at the ceiling. "I think... Jed... I think I'm pregnant." She whispered before closing her eyes.

Jed was taken by surprise at her answer, his smile faltering. "What...Ours?" He asked, confused.

"Can't be yours Jed," Anna whispered, "We haven't done that yet..." She trailed off before feeling tears stinging in her eyes.

Jed stayed silent, staring at her. It wasn't her fault...She had been treated like dirt with Matthew...And his actions were what had got her pregnant. He rolled over onto his back, staring at the roof again.

"I'm sorry Jed," Anna whimpered and then wiped the tears from her eyes.

Jed forced a smile onto his face. "Don't be. It wasn't your fault." He stretched over and kissed her forehead.

Nodding Anna climbed out of the bed. Putting her robe around her, she had found it in a box of Jed's clothes that had been his mother's. She was glad he was letting her wear them.

He sighed and got out of bed, getting out of his night clothes and into his usual clothes. "I'll be outside." He walked out of the house and stood outside, lighting a cigar.

Anna sighed quietly before watching Jed leave. Biting her lip she felt tears flooding her eyes again. Now he probably wouldn't love her...

He sat down on a boulder outside, letting the puffs of smoke mix with the steam that was coming out of his mouth in the cold morning air. He thought of Annalee, he thought of Matthew. He had made up his mind.

Anna sat back down on the bed. Not feeling like doing anything today. Closing her eyes she let out a shaky breath.

Jed looked back at the house, stubbing his cigar out on the rock, before walking back inside, grabbing his gunbelt and slinging it around his waist. It was something he always had on, yet the urgency of his actions were unfamiliar.

"What are you doing?" Anna asked watching him curiously, "Why the hurry?"

Jed looked over at her, and smiled. "Nothing. I was going out hunting was all."

Shrugging Anna laid back on the bed, "Want me to come?" She asked quietly.

"I'd rather go alone." Jed smiled at her, pleading for her to understand.

"Okay, I'll work around the house," Anna said quietly before standing up and walking over to him.

Jed watcher her as she walked towards him, before giving her a warm hug, kissing the top of her head.

"Be safe," Anna whispered and closed her eyes for a moment before stepping back. "I love you."

Jed looked down at her, giving her a smile. "I love you too." He broke away from her, walking towards his mare, who was waiting outside by the hitching post. He mounted up, and giving her one last look, he rode off, in search of her home.

Anna let out a small sigh before busying herself with some work.
